Professor F.F.O Orunwense led management of the University of Benin [UNIBEN] has rusticated five students for exposing unattended poor condition of living of students on the campus and also leading a peaceful protest against what is perceived as irrational hike in fees.

The affected students and the number of semesters for which they are rusticated include the Students Union President, Ogbidi Osemudiamen, who is rusticated for two semesters; Secretary of the Union, Justus Aidenagbon, also for two semesters; Assistant Secretary General, Inocent Ehizuwa Momodu, also two semesters.

Two others who were more affected with higher punishment include the Students Union’s PRO, Goodnews Ehiabi, and Benjamin Majekodunmi Patrick, who were rusticated for four (4) semesters each, translating to two full academic sessions.

They were also declared “barred” from holding any office or participating in any activities of the Students Union in UNIBEN.

The rustication, which is now generating reactions on Social Media reminds of similar actions by other institutions, including Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU); University of Ibadan (UI) and University of Lagos (UNILAG), where students have been victimised with rustications as well as their Union suspended for either leading or allowing peaceful protests happen on the campus against poor management policies and deteriorating welfare conditions on the campus.
